Évaluation des conséquences économiques de la gestion des risques sanitaires liés aux proliférations phytoplanctoniques marines ArchiMer
Ami, Dominique; Rochaix, Lise.
General introduction: The setting up of monitoring networks for coastal water quality of the REPHY type by IFREMER was taken from a public health standpoint and fits broadly in with a principle of precaution regarding eating shellfish meant for human consumption. The benefits to be compared with the costs of managing the REPHY network (estimated at FF7.4 million in 1995) are therefore first and foremost the reduction of the risk of poisoning and can be captured by subtracting the sanitation costs that are associated with them. Evaluating these direct benefits is, however, no easy task. The network leads in fact to the reduction of occurrences of poisoning such that the epidemiological data on which such a calculation should be founded diminishes over time....

Financial losses in pork supply chain: a study of the pre-slaughter handling impacts REA
REIS,JOÃO G. M. DOS; MACHADO,SIVANILZA T.; SANTOS,RODRIGO C.; NÄÄS,IRENILZA DE A.; OLIVEIRA,RONE V..
Brazil is amongst the world’s largest swine producers. However, its competitiveness has been vulnerable due to a lack of cooperation between the supply chain players. This condition makes the financial losses to be evaluated taking into account only an individual node, and most of the time, these damages are imputed by swine breeders. Living weight losses occur between the farm to slaughterhouses, and the main cause of these losses is the pre-slaughter handling, especially during animal transportation. In this research, we analyzed the pre-slaughter handling in a swine farm in Brasilândia, MS, Brazil. Analyzed data were provided by five slaughterhouses (farm clients) from the studied region, in which it was considered living weight losses, carcass...

First results from a pilot survey of recreational fishing in France ArchiMer
Herfaut, Johanna; Levrel, Harold; Thebaud, Olivier; Tranger, Hervé; Berthou, Patrick; Dintheer, Christian; Guyader, Olivier; Morizur, Yvon.
Between 2006 and 2008, Ifremer, in collaboration with the polling institute BVA, implemented a pilot survey of french recreational fisheries. The aim of the survey was to assess the overall population involved in this activity, taking into account the diversity of recreational fishing practices, from fish and shellfish gathering on the seashore to angling and spearfishing. The study was designed to provide first estimates of fishing effort, catches and landings, and economic impacts of recreational fishing. The protocol implemented was two-step. First, a telephone survey of french households, based on a sampling frame of the entire french population of people aged 15+, was carried out to assess the population of fishers and give a first general view of the...

Genetically modified animals in the food and pharmaceutical chains: economics, public perception and policy implications AgEcon
Mora, Cristina; Menozzi, Davide; Aramyan, Lusine H.; Valeeva, Natasha I.; Pakky, R.; Zimmermann, Karin L..
This paper presents ongoing results of the EU project PEGASUS (Public Perception of Genetically modified Animals – Science, Utility and Society, 7th FP).The overall objective is to provide support for future policy regarding the development, implementation and commercialisation of genetically modified (GM) animals, both terrestrial and aquatic, together with the foods and pharmaceutical products derived from them. Food products derived from GM animals have not yet entered the market. Nonetheless, the ongoing discussion about GM crops and the recently initiated discussions about the safety and ethics of foods and pharmaceutical products derived from cloned animals have set the stage for the socio-economical issues that will surround the introduction of GM...

IMPACTO ECONÓMICO DE LAS PLANTAS TÓXICAS PARA EL GANADO SOBRE LA PRODUCCIÓN PECUARIA EN SONORA AgEcon
Denogean Ballesteros, Francisco G.; Moreno Medina, Salomon; Martin Rivera, Martha H.; Ibarra Flores, Fernando A..
Almost in all vegetation types exists species that can cause toxicity to the cattle grazing. Poisonings cause very diverse problems in the cattle being able to affect the reproduction, weight gains, and even death. These problems cause economic losses in cattle industry that is necessary to quantify but very difficult to do so. Sonora has been diagnosed with overgrazed rangelands which is pronounced in deterioration that diminishes the desirable species and increases the undesirable ones, within these are the toxic plants. There have been identified 181 species that are toxic and within these there are 59 species that cattle consumes and cause problems. Based in this, the present study was planned with the purpose of trying to estimate the economic impact...

IMPLAN UNDERSTATES AGRICULTURAL INPUT-OUTPUT MULTIPLIERS: AN APPLICATION TO POTENTIAL AGRICULTURAL/GREEN INDUSTRY DROUGHT IMPACTS IN COLORADO AgEcon
McKean, John R.; Spencer, William P..
Synthesized input-output models are widely used by industry and government economists. The IMPLAN program is popular because it provides user access to the base data so that modifications can be made. The Washington survey-based model and IMPLAN for Washington State are compared, and differences in multipliers are traced to differences in final payments leakages. An adjustment technique for IMPLAN is demonstrated. An application is made to a Colorado potential drought impact analysis. More than 51,000 part- and full-time jobs and $1.6 billion of household income are at stake in the Colorado farm and "green industry" sectors.

Incidences des épisodes d'efflorescences de micro algues toxiques sur les écosystèmes et sur les pêcheries de coquillages en baie de Douarnenez ArchiMer
Thebaud, Olivier; Veron, Gerard; Fifas, Spyros.
The commercial fishery for wedge clam, or telline (Donax trunculus) in the bay of Douarnenez in France started in the early 1980ies. During twenty years, the activity has developed, from an opportunistic fishery, into a regular fishing enterprise for 36 fishermen, who derive from it most, if not all, of their revenue. The fishery is nowadays strictly regulated. It is subject to natural variations in the productivity of clam stocks, in relation with meteorological conditions which can strongly affect the stocks. The bay of Douarnenez has been experiencing regular blooms of harmful algae, both of species leading to shellfish poisoning for human consumption, such as Dinophysis (Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning) and Pseudo-nitzschia (Amnesic Shellfish...

Input-Output Analysis with Public Policy Objectives: A Case Study of the Georgia Cotton Industry AgEcon
Flanders, Archie; Smith, Nathan B.; McKissick, John C..
Farm bill legislation directed at agricultural commodities contributes to economies of rural areas. This research quantifies the economic impacts of the Georgia cotton industry for the U.S. economy. A cotton industry model with cotton and peanut acreage is utilized with IMPLAN to estimate impacts. The Georgia cotton industry creates 4% more tax revenues for federal, state, and local governments than it receives in commodity support payments. Stochastic simulation analysis indicates that the Georgia cotton industry is not likely to remain viable without government payments.

Irrigation water pricing between governmental policies and farmers’ perception: Implications for green-houses horticultural production in Teboulba (Tunisia) AgEcon
Chebil, Ali; Frija, Aymen; Thabet, Chokri.
A positive mathematical programming model was constructed in this study to assess the effect of three water pricing scenarios on Teboulba’s agricultural production systems. The effects of these scenarios were estimated for three groups of farmers from three irrigated districts. Results show that water demand in group 1 remains inelastic until achieving the price of 0.20 TD. A price above this level decreases water consumption, farmer’s incomes as well as seasonal labor demand. For groups 2 and 3, the water demand curves remain highly inelastic even with a full cost recovery price. However, once reaching this last price, the model shows important income reductions reaching 20% of the current observed income. Moreover, a pricing policy aiming to recover...

Measuring the Economic Impact of Tourism and Special Events: Lessons from Mississippi AgEcon
Myles, Albert E.; Carter, Rachael.
With the use of this dynamic spreadsheet model, tourism managers can gain valuable insight into tourism and special events. This insight can help them plan future events or evaluate whether the costs of producing these events are justified by the benefits. Visitor spending from outside the county creates direct sales in the local economy. Each dollar of direct sales adds indirect and induced spending in the county. Besides these impacts, visitor spending produces labor income and jobs for residents in the county.

Measuring the Local Economic Impact of Cooperatives AgEcon
Zeuli, Kimberly A.; Deller, Steven C..
The ability to measure the economic importance of cooperatives to communities is not purely an academic question. Policy makers, cooperative organizations, and community development practitioners are increasingly asking for such information. The most commonly used methodology is input-output analysis. The limitations of input-output analysis when applied to cooperatives have not yet been comprehensively explained in the literature, although they significantly affect the application of the model as well as the interpretation of results. We discuss five issues that need to be addressed when using input-output models and suggest additional analysis that should be completed to gain an accurate assessment of the local economic impact of cooperatives.

MIGRANT FARM WORKERS ON VIRGINIA'S EASTERN SHORE: AN ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC IMPACTS AgEcon
Sills, Erin O.; Alwang, Jeffrey Roger; Driscoll, Paul J..
The economic impact of migrant farmworkers on an agriculture-dependent region is investigated. The direct effects of inflows of state and federal dollars for migrant services, and production of high-valued commodities are computed. Indirect and induced effects are modelled through the use of the IMPLAN input output model. Various alternatives to migrant labor are investigated, including production of less labor-intensive crops, acreage retirement, and contract H2A workers. Migrants are found to create substantial economic activity on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
